Illustrating Kaitoa the Kiwi for Long White Cloud Books

At Mandii Pope Digital, I am thrilled to share my journey of illustrating Kaitoa the Kiwi, a heartfelt children’s book published by Long White Cloud Books. This enchanting story, written by renowned NZ musician Jayson Norris, follows Kaitoa, a kiwi who struggles with self-acceptance due to his short wings.

Through vibrant and whimsical illustrations, I aimed to bring Kaitoa's world to life, capturing the beauty of New Zealand's landscapes and the charm of its native wildlife. Each page is designed to engage young readers aged 0-7, inviting them to join Kaitoa on his journey of discovery as he meets Ruru, Tui, and a friendly blue penguin. Together, they explore themes of friendship, identity, and the importance of embracing one’s uniqueness.

As the illustrator, I collaborated closely with Jayson to ensure that every illustration complements the narrative, enhancing the storytelling experience. The illustrations are not only visually appealing but also serve as a powerful tool for sparking conversations about self-acceptance and cultural pride.
